Well, I sort of understand the rationale behind a racially and socioeconomically diverse campus. The former brings different viewpoints, which is important, and the latter helps those who don't and can't have the same kind of opportunities. If you're working 20 hours a week during the school year and overtime in the summer, you'll have less time to spend on schoolwork and studying, much less extracurriculars. You wouldn't be able to compete with middle- and upper-class students who can take prep courses, attend private or magnet schools (cf. Charter doesn't provide after-school transportation), or even volunteer because they can't get places (no car, or parents have to use car to get to work).
