The prose is clunky--I kept having the urge to whip out a red pen
Ugh, I hate that feeling so, so much. I worked as an editor for a local magazine for a few years and I just can't not mentally edit prose as I read it any more. The degree to which I enjoy a book is usually directly related to how infrequently the little imaginary red pen comes out as I go. =)
