I've been thinking about joining BookMooch for a while now; I actually do have an account, but with nothing on it. My main concern is shipping costs--hence, I ask the almighty flist! If I did decide to participate, I'd only ship within the US; so, considering that I live on the East Coast, what are the approximate/average shipping costs for mass market, trade, and hardcover (respectively)? I'm not sure if cost increases with distance if it's domestic, but you can figure shipping to California for the purposes of this question.

For books, the cheapest method is media mail. The postal rates, however, are flat so you'd pay $2.13 up to a pound or so. That covers mass markets and most trades. If you have the larger trade paperbacks, then yes it'll cost more -- maybe $2.30 or so. Hardcovers tend to cost ~$2.50, depending on size. I've never had to pay more than $3 for domestic postage for one book. So estimate about $2-3 per book.

(But if you're mailing slim paperbacks -- like category romances, frex -- pay attention to the postage rates that pop up. Many times it's actually cheaper to mail those first class mail as they come out to $1.98 or so.)

As I have no idea what Bookmooch is I have nothing to say on the topic of your post. But just today I realized I had only briefly skimmed your lj and decided to peruse it more thoroughly today. Now that I have I think I love you.

Book recs! Coherently written! With references to other books!

Book recs are made of win and so are you :).
(of course when I'll actually read theses recs and the books is another thing entirely as right now I have about 7 books to read XD. STILL!)

No see thats the immediate list. Which means books from the library that need to be returned and Sharon's books XD. Otherwise I have plenty of books I really want to read that aren't in the 7 I mentioned.
