Just picked this up from the library today, and I raced through it with my usual pleasure-manga speed--meaning, I didn't stop to analyze anything. All I can say, really, is that I cried and laughed at different points. This volume has a lot of flashback, because it shows Kyoko and Katsuya meeting--then, of course, Katsuya's death. The images are very graphic in intensity, and the dialogue is perfect even in translation. For example: "On the day Katsuya died...why didn't the world die with him?" We only know Katsuya for half of one volume, but we join Kyoko in mourning him. This also mirrors Tohru after Kyoko's death--both relationships were deeply loving and both were broken up by a sudden, early death. Though, the cause of Katsuya dying is never made clear and his story contains a sense of finality.
But then afterwards, another scene made me laugh out loud.
Tohru: I'm very inexperienced, but please regard me kindly.
Shishou (Kyo's mentor): No, no. I suspect that I also have imperfections, but please regard me kindly. *bows*
Tohru: Oh! N-not at all! I'm not worthy of such an honor! *bows*
Kyo: You look like you came to Shishou to get married.
Hee!
